How much time to run a pitch?

Last week we took a call from a client who is a marketer at a major advertiser. He was enquiring about selecting a digital agency and wondered "how long should it take?"

"Do you mean how much time will it take you or how long it will take?" we asked.

"Both, I guess."

"Well it will take you about 12 - 15 weeks" we replied.

He couldn't believe it. "Why so long?".

And this is a very common question. To run our recommended full selection process involves the following:

Week 1 - Develop brief of agency required
Week 2 - Market search including conflicts and suitable agency
Week 3 - ....

What makes an idea BIG?

At Spikes Asia 2010 in Singapore in September this year, Yahoo were asking delegates "What makes an idea BIG?"

Here are some of the answers from people like James Thompson, CMO, APAC, Diageo and Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO, WPP and Bob Jeffery, Chairman, Worldwide CEO, JWT and Bob Greenberg, Global CCO, Chairman and CEO, R/GA and Calvin Soh, Vice Chairman, CCO Asia, Publicis and Darren Woolley from TrinityP3.

At the Caxton Award Weekend last month, Jon Wilkins from Naked argued that rather than the big idea, we should be looking for a series of small ideas. It encourages experimentation and learning, which is more responsible, more fun and helps make large brands more intimate with their audience.

Darren Woolley insightfully noted "A big idea is not a big idea until it creates value".
